First Printing

It is important to look for the publisher’s page of a book which is located at the beginning of every book. 

1st editions and first printings are the very first printing of a book and the characteristics can be different on the publisher’s page!  However, here are a few considerations to identify a first printing book. 

1.  Number line consists of a sequence of  consecutive numbers.  Below are examples which identify a 1st edition and 1st printing – Important: these do not have any other numbers around the number line – if they do – they are 1st editions by NOT a First Printing:
   • 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
   • 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2
   • 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20
2.  No number line contained on the publishers page – but, it states “First Edition” or “First Canadian Edition”.  These are 1st editions and first printings.
